Brad and Sylvie an Eclipse headed out today and we were so sad to see them go. If
all goes as planned. We will only be a week behind them. We have spent just about
every day doing something or other with them and it will be diffferent now that they
are gone. But I am sure we can find something to occupy our time.

Our part came in and Larry is installing it within the next few days.

Happy Valentine's Day to all. I actually got a Valentine's gift from my sweet
husband. It was quite a shock since shopping on this island is next to
nonexistant. But he managed to find a little something to prove once again how
thoughtful he is.

Unfortunately, there was a tragic accident here in the Bahamas near an island just
south of us. It seems one boat got a line tied around their prop and hit a reef. The
boat was sinking and another boat went to help it. In the process of helping, the
second boat began taking on water and after trying to keep up with the water for
about 13 hours, they hit another reef and began to sink as well. Eventually they
abandoned ship. So both boats were lost. All the crew of both boats were safe but it
is still so sad to think about losing everything and having to watch your boat go
down. I can't imagine such a horror. It has gotten a lot of people thinking around
here about what thet would do in different emergency situations. I suppose that is a
good thing, but I can't seem to stop thinking about those people and what a tragedy
this is for them.

Well, we finally got the heck out of Georgetown. We sailed to Long Island in
beautiful weather. Not a long trip, only about 40 miles, but at least we are NOT in
Georgetown anymore and we have started the next leg south. We anchored in Thompson
Bay.
Saturday February 18, 2006
Sailed from Thompson to Calabash Bay. Real sailing... no motoring. Great sail! We
are staged to make an overnighter to Mayaguana tomorrow.
Sunday-Monday February 19-20, 2006
We left Long Island headed for Mayaguana and we figured we would be there around
noon. We miscalculated because we went so fast. We ended up having to slow down
because you could not get into the anchorage we were going to at night... too many
reefs. So we slowed down and arrived at 6:30 AM. We ended up staying at a different
anchorage because the conditions were not good to see the reefs... choppy and
cloudy. So we found a different anchorage, walked the dogs and took naps.
Tuesday-Friday February 21-24, 2006
We headed to Turks and Caicos and then on to Luperon. Lots of lumpy water and high
seas but we made it OK.
Saturday February 25, 2006
We are in Luperon, Dominican Republic. Larry and I planned to be fluent in Spanish
by the time we reached here but we did not quite reach that goal. So communication
here is a bit of a challenge. The people are so friendly and the country is
beautiful. However, the poverty is overwhelming and being the animal person that I
am, I am heartbroken to see all the wild dogs and scrawny horses, goats and donkeys
walking along the streets. It is definitely a third world country but a fascinating
place to visit. So much to offer and lots of great things to do.

We have played tourist for a few days and this city is really amazing. It is so
cheap to live here and the food is great. It is much cheaper to eat out then cook on
the boat, so that is a nice switch. As the pics show, the people here are very poor
and the city is really dirty. Everyone is so friendly. There are lots of animals
here in the city, just walking around. I, of course, was worried that they were not
getting fed. I guess they were just fine before I got here and will be when I leave.
Tuesday February 28, 2006
We rented a van for the day to go to Santiago to provision. The cost of renting a
van and driver to take us around all day to shop, wait for us while we were in the
stores, so that we could have a place to put all our packages, was $15.00 a person.
There were 4 of us and we had a ball. We hit the big stores and were back in Luperon
before dark. We got a chance to see more of the country which is really pretty but
really very poor. I don't think I could live here. There are lots of cruisers who
have come here and never left because it is so cheap, but the poverty bothers me too
much.
